Prenuvo's updated clinical guidance on how often you should get a whole body scan

July 1, 2025

As the Senior Medical Director of Preventative Medicine at Prenuvo, I’ve reviewed results from tens of thousands of patient scans alongside our team of 100+ radiologists, and the data is clear: annual whole body MRI is one of the most powerful ways to detect serious conditions early—often before symptoms arise.

While annual physicals remain an important part of preventive care, they can only tell part of the story. Many life-altering diseases—like cancer, aneurysms, or degenerative changes—develop silently and go undetected by standard exams or lab work.

That’s why our clinical team now recommends whole body MRI as a yearly screening tool for most adults, particularly those over 40 or with average or elevated risk factors. In our view, it's not just a smart choice—it’s becoming an essential layer of modern preventive care.

What an annual whole body MRI can add to your health routine

Early detection, before symptoms appear

MRI is one of the most powerful tools in diagnostic medicine. In fact, according to a comprehensive review in the journal Clinical Imaging, whole body MRI does more than just detect disease—it helps doctors understand how widespread or advanced a cancer is, which can lead to more precise and effective treatment plans.

When performed at a high standard, a whole body MRI can detect hundreds of conditions across organs, tissues, and neurological systems—often at their earliest stages. Even asymptomatic individuals may have clinically significant findings. And the earlier an issue is identified, the more options there tend to be—often less invasive, more effective, and with better long-term outcomes.

A baseline for your body—year over year

Getting a whole body MRI annually helps establish a comprehensive, personalized view of your internal health. Instead of comparing your results to population averages, you and your doctor can monitor actual changes inside your body from year to year.

Trading guesswork for clarity and peace of mind

Many people seek out MRIs after symptoms appear. But by that time, treatment options may be more limited. Annual whole body MRI flips the script, offering reassurance when all is well—or prompting follow-up when something needs attention. Either way, it adds a layer of certainty to your health strategy.

How often should you get a Prenuvo scan?

If you’re adding whole body MRI to your annual health routine, the natural question is: how often should you do it?

For most people, once a year is just right.

That’s now the new guidance from Prenuvo’s medical team—grounded in clinical data from over 39,000 scans. Public health institutions like the CDC and Cancer Research UK also support age-based approaches to screening, recognizing that the risk for many cancers increases significantly with age. These findings align with our recommendation for annual whole body MRI for most adults over 40, applying the same preventive logic we use for routine physicals, dental visits, and vision exams: detect issues early, when they’re easier to treat.

Here’s how the cadence breaks down:

  • Annual scans are recommended for most adults over 40 or anyone with average or elevated risk.

  • Every 6–12 months may be advised after specific findings or based on individual risk factors.

  • Every 12–24 months could be appropriate for younger, low-risk individuals.

This cadence is supported by how most serious diseases—especially cancers—tend to progress. Studies show that many tumors grow slowly, often taking months or even years to double in size. That makes an annual scan a practical window for catching something early, before it becomes more difficult to treat. For the vast majority of people, yearly imaging provides a responsible and effective rhythm for proactive health.

Internal analysis of 39,265 Prenuvo scans conducted between October 2023 and July 2024, reviewed by the Prenuvo Clinical Subcommittee, found that over 99% of patients would benefit from a 12-month follow-up—supporting what cancer research tells us about how long it can take for serious conditions to progress silently.

How whole body MRIs are redefining healthcare practices

The idea of getting a yearly scan might sound futuristic. But in many ways, it’s simply the next logical step in preventive medicine and proactive healthcare.

We already screen our teeth bi-annually for cavities we can’t feel. We check our eyes for changes before vision noticeably worsens. Whole body MRI brings that same early-detection mindset to your entire body—without radiation or invasive procedures.

Why not pair your annual physical with an annual MRI to gain a more complete view of your health? You help close the gaps that traditional care can’t always catch. And you move from reactive to truly proactive healthcare.

See what your annual check-up may be missing

A Prenuvo Whole Body MRI was built to detect over 500 conditions across 33 organs—and to do so with clinical integrity at every step.

Whether you’re managing risk, monitoring your health trajectory, or simply investing in peace of mind, an annual Prenuvo scan gives you and your healthcare team more to work with.
