Bowel adenocarcinoma
Adenocarcinomas are the most common type of cancer in both the large and small bowel. As with other cancers, it occurs due to a mutation of a gene. The tumor usually starts out as a polyp, and if untreated, can evolve into adenocarcinoma of the bowel. It is estimated that half of all bowel cancers are related to lifestyle, with a quarter of all bowel cancers being preventable.Polyps which are considered pre-cancerous are not well seen by imaging, including the Prenuvo scan. Therefore colonoscopy is important for screening, as it is the only method to remove polyps and thus prevent colon cancer.
Prenuvo exam does not replace recommended screenings such as colonoscopy. For colon cancer screening in particular, screening colonoscopy remains the gold standard. These dedicated, specific diagnostically-tailored techniques remain the most accurate for detecting early mucosal or precancerous changes.
Most medical organizations recommend that adults begin regular colon cancer screening at age 45, typically with a colonoscopy every 10 years (or sooner based on personal risk factors). The Prenuvo scan should be considered complementary to, not a replacement for, standard colon cancer screening.
